Having a test management system that fits in with your existing processes is pretty important, however this should not come at the cost of taking time to learn the software and battling with setting it up. From experience these jira plugins can often lack functionality and be a little painful to get going.

One tool which I use myself is http://www.testlodge.com which integrates with Jira using their api meaning there was no plugin to install and the tool was also really simple to use.

What are your thoughts on tools such as this?

Nice article do you have any experience using any of these tools. We are looking at evualuating these 2 tools that integrate with JIRA

Thank you, Peter for the good words.
As I wrote in the article, the closest Jira plugin is synapseRT from the Go2Group (https://www.go2group.com/atlassian/jira-software/add-ons/synapsert/). I use it at Bluescape.
I also provide my feedback to the plugin developers, and they are very responsive :-)

Thank you, Adam for the comments.
In my view, there is a big difference for the test case management system being “integrated” vs. “connected” with the defect tracking system and requirements management system.
Instead of having three “connected” systems, I prefer to have one, in my case, Jira. This is my requirement No 2.

Depending on what you’re needs are, sometimes it’s worth having a full-blown test management tool that can integrate with your bug-tracker (in this case JIRA) instead of simply using a plugin. Also when looking at your entire testing architecture, it may be worth having an integrated Solution (e.g. SpiraTest, HP ALM, RQM) instead of gluing together different tools. However if you are fully vested in the Atlassian suite, then a TCM that integrates with JIRA is a good idea, just don’t let the tail wag the dog so to speak!
