I have found that watir was slow in running tests agains pages that used frames extensively, so I had to switch to using selenium-webdriver directly along with page-object for encapsulating the page behaviour.

For any new projects the pages should be designed with the BDD approach so that automation testing especially tools like watir etc are more productive and efficient to use.
