Software as a Service (SaaS) has become an essential component of enterprises throughout the world as the digital era evolves. The SaaS model, which is expected to generate more than $462 billion in revenue by 2028, distributes applications via the Internet without the need for customers to install or update software. Author: Deborah Simons It is critical to recognize the value of rigorous SaaS application testing. That is what allows these systems to remain operating, maintain high-level security, and deliver a perfect, user-centric experience. Whether you’re new to SaaS testing or want to improve your current tactics, this thorough SaaS testing checklist will give you essential insights. What is SaaS Testing? SaaS testing is the process of checking SaaS apps’ functioning and determining if they match the stated criteria. It also includes identifying and resolving all potential flaws and mistakes. SaaS applications can be deployed in the cloud, on-premises, or a combination of the two. Testing methodologies may differ depending on the deployment type used. In a word, SaaS testing assures that software hosted on the Internet satisfies functional and business objectives and realizes its full potential. 3 Examples of How SaaS Testing Can Help a Business Media and publishing Publications strive to increase the number of readers, subscribers, time spent on the site, and the number of views on the site itself and social networks. Netflix viewers enjoy using the service. This is largely because Netflix consistently and systematically tests any change on the site. For example, Netflix personalizes [...]

This talk will take you through the challenge of testing a cloud-native application that uses MQTT (a pub/sub protocol), webhooks and REST to interact with IoT devices on top of AWS. It uses services which cannot be run on a developers machine for testing, so it was needed to develop a test setup which enables us to continuously test against real services. A Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) approach was used to write the tests to make the progress in the project self-documenting and the test immune against effects of big refactorings. This provided an extra set of challenges since these tests are written in a serial manner, which does not fit the asynchronous execution of the real solution. You will learn how all this is done using JavaScript and that this is not only an interesting challenge but uses tests that behave like real users, and that there is an Ops person in all of us.

The evolution of software from a simple application running in an isolated system to a multi-node solution in a network and now to geographically distributed cloud solution with hundreds or thousands of nodes, has brought about its own challenges in terms of testing. Testing strategies which works well in one model is not really applicable to others. While many of the tests for a cloud hosted solution can be done by replicating a subset of the actual production environment, some test to be effective need a production like environment. This could be challenging if the hosted solution is either complex or large. Though one might successfully replicate production environment for testing, it is very difficult or too expensive to replicate end user behavior, as the sample set of users in cloud could be very large. One option to overcome the given problem is to perform the testing in a live production environment. This presentation attempts to bring forth the challenges and possible suggestions for testing cloud hosted solutions in a live production environment. Video producer: http://www.pnsqc.org/

It is often said that “it’s always the baker’s children who have no bread”. In this very interesting article, Ed Glas explains how Microsoft manage the load testing efforts for its Visual Studio Online tool based on a Cloud architecture. Visual Studio Online is developed in 3 week sprints. At the end of each sprint, the service is validates and then deployed during the first week of the following sprint. This verification week dedicated only to perform the final verification before deployment. Load testing is a critical part of their software development process and load tests are run regularly throughout a sprint. The load testing process is based on set of “scripts” that target different layers of the product’s architecture, depending on the subsystem they are targeting. Web tests are used to drive load to the Web site and Web pages, and “unit” tests to drive load to the Web services. The script test mix and load patterns are varied to suit the purpose of each load test. The article explains in details and with examples the different types of load tests and their purpose. it also outlines the type of load patterns and test mix we use. Ed Glas conclusion is that “Regularly running load tests is critical to maintaining a high level of quality during our sprints and deploying every three weeks.” Read the complete article on http://blogs.msdn.com/b/edglas/archive/2013/11/27/load-testing-visual-studio-online.aspx

It’s 4am and you don’t know it, but you’re about to get three times the traffic you were expecting. Is your service ready to handle it? Systems are only as scalable as their weakest component. Large scale load testing in production is the best (and surest) way to ensure that services can truly scale to the unexpected and Amazon Web Services (AWS) can help you. Load generator itself can be difficult to scale, expensive to run on hundreds or thousands of hosts, challenging to keep the data secure, and time consuming to develop. The Amazon.com retail site is one of most heavily used sites in the world, and has to be ready for anything, at anytime. How do you design a load test for this in record time while keeping it cost effective? Well, you use AWS! Come learn Best Practices on how you can use Amazon SQS, Amazon S3, Amazon EC2, Amazon CloudWatch, Auto Scaling, and Amazon DynamoDB to design horizontally scalable large-scale load tests that can simulate the load that millions of users are putting onto your site. We met a tight schedule and did it under budget thanks to AWS and you can too! Event: AWS re:Invent 2013

Cloud applications typically involve several components that interact through an API that exchanges data in either the XML or JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) formats. This article from Shalini Gilra, Prem Prakash and Tom Tuohy discusses techniques for using the open source tool Apache JMeter to perform functional, performance and reliability testing of Cloud applications that use RESTful web APIs and JSON. As multitenancy is an important feature of Cloud application, this article shows how to incorporate data separation and data retrieval programmatically to ensure data integrity. It explains how to write effective JMeter test scripts that facilitate the maintenance, re-usability, and modularity. You will also learn how to use configuration and properties files so that the same scripts can run in multiple environments. The article also explains how to etend functional JMeter scripts for performance and reliability testing Read the complete article on http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/cloud/library/cl-jmeter-restful/index.html

This blog post provides a detail process on how to create and run unit tests for Google App Engine applications. The author shows how to write the tests using the standard python unittest module and execute them with gaeunit, a web based test runner. He reminds us that it is easier to write unit tests during design rather than afterwards. We should also keep the tests high level so that further detailed modifications will not break the tests. A short video summarizing Google App Engine unit testing is available at the end.
